Minutes of the book club meet held on November 26, 2014

Any new club or an initiative has good response. Every one wish to become part of it. Same thing happened with our book club. Initially there were many people who showed interest in joining the club, but as the days passed, only the genuine readers remained, rest of them left the club or were just enquirers!!!. It is almost 2 years since new member had joined. I had been wanting to increase the number of members, however there was some hesitation from the members. They were comfortable with each other and they preferred smaller group. We are seven of us. However, I was finding a very set pattern among the group and hence was looking for new entrants. I got this opportunity when the company decided to launch the hobby club.  I decided to register our book club also.

Lo and behold !!!do members ke saath club ka khata khul gaya....Ms Siji Thomas and Mr. Parikshit Chitnis joined the group (at least showed the interest of attending the meeting and managed to attend the meet).

Siji is an author of the book "Seema in Mumbai". She discussed her book in the meeting. She is in the process of penning down one more book...Kudos Siji...

Parikshit apart from an avid reader, is also a blogger, writer, artist, environmentalist, squash player......anything left???

Karthik lately has been an active reviewer. Currently he is reviewing 3 books. He discussed Love, job or country by Rohit Agarwal.

Pratibha and Vignesh both were busy with work and could not get time to read any book.

Deepali discussed One life is not enough: an autobiography of Natwar Singh. The autobiography talks about his experiences in the political arena.

Amit discussed Dilip Kumar: The substance and the shadow: an autobiography.

Is there anything to be learned by reading people's biography?...Vignesh pointed out that the surrounding and the environment of that person matters...There are some biographies from whom we get inspired, on the other hand some biographies might give an insight of that person's life.

I read Half Girlfriend by Chetan Bhagat. The story revolves around a Riya who is from a rich background and Madhav is sportsman from Bihar. Madhav Boy falls in love with the Riya but she considers Madhav as her friend and not a lover... There is a twist in the story...Will not reveal...

Sumit discussed The power of your sub conscious mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy. After reading a couple os self help books, Sumit summed up the essence very succinctly. I asked him to pen it down for me. He did an excellent job.

His take on self help books:
After reading about 5-6 selfhelp books in a row now every book appears to me having same ingredients but differently put in order.

All the books had same thing to offer like
  • Be positive
  • Overcome Fear
  • Imagine your Goal
  • Repeat positive affirmations for 21 days
  • How to have confidence
  • Overcome your Fear

Etc. etc. etc.

There is big contrast between the approach mentioned by these authors and our ancient Indian text and books such as Gita.
Gita says not to have desire for fruits of actions whereas these authors suggest to imagine fruits first.
After going through both of these technique I think the technique suggested by Gita is better because there is less harm to your physical and mental space when you don’t get what you wish for.

When you think of fruits of action then all of your energy is frittered away with emotions and instead of using your 100% potential you use only a percent of that.
When you desire for anything you get attached,
When you get attached and you don’t get things you desired you get angry,
When you get angry you lose your memory,
When you lose memory you lose power of discrimination,
And then you get destroyed.
Instead have a goal but never think of dream of fruits you may get after achieving goal but just work on the goal and work incessantly.

That’s what Swami Vivekananda calls the person as “Master”. To whom biggest task is same as the lowest task, who whether he is President of Country or Peon in office he will work with same dedication.
It’s the Slave who gets attached to the work and cries if he didn’t gets satisfied.

If we work according to Gita way whether you are successful or unsuccessful you are happy and that’s what in “Power of your Subconscious Mind” book says “Success is when you have peace”.

Summary-Techniques suggested in self help book works and you achieve great heights but the Master technique is where you have peace, happiness from very start of your work mentioned in “Gita” and yes it was itself delivered by God “Believe in That” J

Amit questioned what about non passionate people. What about people who doesn't wish to do anything in life. what about lazy people?

Parikshit responded:

There are two kinds of people. One is pasisonate. other is non-passionate. Non passionate people are like dry leaves of a tree. they will live and die.
Passionate people are like flowers or fruits. They will also live and die, but will add something to someone..and if not anything..then atleast make the world beautiful.
.
Self- Help books mostly say that one must go out and act.

I moved your cheese author, wrote a whole book without mentioning the word cheese and it was totally against self-help books. So in the end he says, stop reading self-help books, start acting.

Which is indeed true!!!

Mahabaleshwar Trip (October 20 -23, 2014)

Given a choice between work and Travel, I would prefer Travel any time. I love nature, like to explore new places. Last year when I visited US, that time I had decided to explore India first and then if there is still balance in the bank account would visit abroad.  Honestly, I think one life would be insufficient to explore India!!!. There are sooooooooo many places to see in India and so little time left!!!!!

Since I try to do 3 trips in a year, one pilgrimage trip on my birthday, second one in May (trek) and third one a short trip(Nov - Dec) which was pending. For a very long time, had a desire to visit Mahabaleshwar and there was opportunity coming up. When I went to meet my college friends, Manisha and Swati the topic of going on tour came up. During the conversation, Manisha told about her WAI / Mahabaleshwar experience. Enquired about the stay and the tour. She had stayed at one of the Wada (very old house with 13-14 rooms). One can hire a taxi and go to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. I liked the idea of Home stay and decided to go in Diwali holidays. Since it was Diwali, nobody wanted to leave their house and go for touring. So I decided to go alone, a solo trip.

Booked a ticket with Neeta travels to Mahabaleshwar and alighted at WAI Bus depot. Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar is 262 kms. Mumbai to Wai is 231 kms. approx it takes 4- 5hrs to reach Wai from Mumbai. The place where I was going to stay was Mr. Karandikar's Wada. Took a auto to Mr. Karandikar's Wada. Everyone in Wai seemed to know the place. Quite a few generations of Karandikar family have been staying in Wai.

Till I saw the wada, I had absolutely no idea what a Wada was. I was literally shocked to see such a huge place with very old style of furniture.. Btw, Wada was 250 yrs old!!!!It had almost 15-16 rooms , 3 bathrooms and a front yard and back yard. WAI is famous for film shootings. It has a lovely picturesque with greenery surrounded by mountains and closer to Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. In fact when I entered the wada, there were approx. 50-60 people  in the verandah for makeup. Later on came to know children's movie was being shot in the opp Wada. This place was rented for makeup.
Karandikar's Wada, WAI
Since I reached in the afternoon, decided to explore WAI. Sightseeing was taken care by Mr. Karandikar. An auto was hired to visit nearby place in WAI.

Wai is situated on the Mahad - Pandharpur State Highway. Wai is known for its ghats on the banks of the Krishna River and its temples, esp the Dholya Ganapati on the Ganapati Ghat.

Day 1:
I had half a day at my disposal. Hired a Auto and visited nearby places in WAI. There is not much to see in WAI..however outskirts of Wai is full of greenery. At either side of the road, you will find rice paddy, sugarcane, soya, ground nuts....

First place in the agenda was Nana Phadnis's Wada. Since I had just got a glimpse of Karandikar's Wada, was expecting the much bigger and colourful wada. I was greatly disappointed..The wada was in a very dilated state. Entire armory used in the battle has been shifted to Pune museum...Not recommended to visit.

Nana Phadnis Wada, WAI
Krishna Ghat was beautiful. Temples surrounded by Krishna river. Many of the film shootings were shot at this Ghat...When I visited the Ghat, the scenery was apt for shooting!!!few females were washing clothes, buffaloes were taking bath in the river, elderly men were chatting, kids were playing, I didn't feel like leaving the place..

Dhom Dam: is situated at the Krishna & Kamandalu river. This dam can be seen from outside only.
However after much pleading with the authorities, we got the permission of seeing it from the top. The view was stupendous and since it was almost sunset time, it added all the more!!!!Only regret was photography was not allowed.  It was a huge dam surrounded by greenery, and further down, boating rides were available as also there were dolphins in deep down the dam.

Dhom Dam, WAI
The main attraction of WAI was Maha Ganapti. Because of its height and weight it is also called as 'Dholya' Ganapati. Located on the banks of Krishna river, the temple was built in 1691. The idol is 24 meters in height and 2 mtrs in circumference and is made from one stone. In the evening, the place was full of people, at one side elderly males were chatting, female group was seen exchanging their daily events, younger couples were busy playing with their kids, this was an ideal place for everyone to meet!!The environment was very pleasant. Till the time, I was in WAI I spend entire evenings at the temple.

Day 2:
Pratapgad, Panchgani & Mahabaleshwar

Next day around 8am I started for Pratapgad, Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar are on one side of the Wai and Pratapgad on the other side.

Pratapgad fort is located 22 kms from Mahabaleshwar. Shivaji Maharaj commissioned Moropant Trimbak Pingle, his Prime Minister to undertake the construction of this fort in order to defend the banks of the Nira and Koyna rivers and to defend the Par pass. The Battle of Pratapgad between Shivaji and Afzal Khan was fought below the ramparts of this fort in 1659. Afzal Khan's head is said to be buried a little farther from this fort. Forts till today have a very historical importance. When you visit these kind of places, you imagine the things that have happened there. When the guide shows you the place where the king used to meet the Praja, or the different ways from where the elephants, horses, Mawlas used to go, or the bathing tank where the females used to take bath, 400 years old but stil you can actually feel the moments, imagining them right in front of you!!!!
One must surely visit this place just to feel the days of Shivaji Maharaj!!...and don't miss the delicious zhunka bhakri, thali pith, taak (chaas), on the way.

We 're together, come what may!!!

Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar

The road from Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar is spectacular... both the sides of the road is covered by   the trees. Looks like a tunnel of trees..Frankly, there is nothing in Mahabaleshwar or Panchgani to see but enroute from Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar is magnificent.  The view is still fresh in my mind. It looked very similar to Matheran. There are points to see and each point is located at far away.. Since you have gone all the way to see them, no point in missing them even though they looked all the same!!!..I managed to see few points and skipped the lesser important points.. Visited Elephant head or the Needly hole point, Lodwik point, Elphinstone point, Arthur's seat point, Tiger spring point are some of the points which I saw. Elephant head or Needle hole point was the most eye catching point. It very closely resembles the head of the elephant and there is distinct hole between trunk and the head of elephant. One of Nature's marvellous creations!!!

Elephant Head point, Mahabaleshwar

Panchganga Mandir

One of the holy place and a prime attraction of Mahabaleshwar is the Panchganga Mandir.
The confluence of five different rivers, viz. Koyna, Krishna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri has given the name Panchganga where Panch means five and Ganga means river. All the rivers come out of a cow's mouth which is carved out of a stone. A very unique thing about this place is that even if the flow of the rivers increases the water never overflows out of the tank, it remains at the same level.
Must see.

1/2 km away from Panchganga is the Krishna temple. Two rivers namely the Krishna and Bhagarathi meet here. The temple is 4500 yrs old.

Table Land point, Panchgani
Table land point at Panchgani is the most captivating point. This flat large expanse is the second longest mountain plateau in Asia. This is the highest part of Panchgani with an elevation of 4550 feet above sea level & covers 95 acres of land. This is indeed another of nature;s beautiful creation!!The flat land is so vast that it will almost require a day to cover the entire land. I was walking, walking and walking and then stopped as I couldn't see any end to the land. However it was unbelievable that at such a height there can be such a vast of flat land!!!

On the way back from Panchgani to Wai, couldn't resist Mapro garden. All the Mapro products are sold at this store. Don't miss the Squashes, Jam and yes very yummy Sandwiches J

Day 3: Aund & Sajjangad

Aund
Shri Bhavani Museum at Aund is a must visit. Museum has a superb collection of original paintings of world famous painters, artefacts made up of marble, sandalwood, sculptured pots, weapons, holy books, etc.   Words fail to describe the paintings and the sculptures. They were superb...I had only heard of Raja Ravi Verma as one of the greatest painter from India but when I saw his paintings I realised why he was the greatest painter!!!!Painting of renowned painters such as Baburao Painter, Satavlekar, Thakursing, Dhulender are displayed in the museum. There are total 19 galleries in the museum. To actually see each and every painting and sculptures, a day would not suffice!!!Because of time constraints, I had to skip some of the galleries...However, I intend to visit the museum just to see the paintings once again..This is a must see, if you happen to visit Mahabaleshwar or Satara.

Sajjangad
It is located near the city of Satara. It is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas, a saint, Guru of Chatrapati Shivaji and social reformer in the 17th century.  This is also the Samadhi Place of Sant Ramdas. There are two temples where Shivaji Maharaj used to meet / consult Ramdas Swami. One was Hanuman temple, located slightly away from the main temple and another one was Devi's temple. Everyday the temple offers prasad (lunch) for the people who come to offer their prayers. I always feel one should make it a point to visit the forts, you get the feeling of witnessing the battles, wars and to be with the great warriors!!!a very beautiful experience happened when I visited the Devi's temple. I went to offer my prayers to the Devi. There was a priest who was reciting Arti in sanskrit. His voice was so melodious, I just stood at the entrance. He looked behind and with a sign he asked me to come inside the temple. Went inside and sat there till he finished the shlokas. After finishing, he asked me from where I had come and in turn thanked him for the shlokas which he sang in a melodious voice.

View from Sajjangad

It is always advisable to stay away from the main places. Main tourist places are usually expensive, difficult to get accommodation during the festive season and too crowded. Hence I decided to stay at WAI and hired a private taxi to visit the tourist places.

All in all, I had a wonderful time in Wai, Panchgani, Aund, Mahabaleshwar. Stay was very comfortable (Karandikar's Wada). Journey was good and the moments, memorable.

Skating to Dating!!!!!!

It is a ritual in the bus to distribute Chocolates, sweets, prasad, snacks on occasion of any good news, birhtdays, pooja, or if anyone has gone on vacation (special delicacies of that place), etc. Yesterday we got to eat peda(s) in the evening. Obviously people were curious to know the reason.  It went like this:

Last person in the bus who conveyed the news to the front people: D's son won the state level
championship in SKATING!!!

Reached the news by the middle of the bus: D is dating !!!!and hence the sweets...

By the time it reached us: D's dating and has become a proud parent of a son and hence the sweets!!!

Maid in 2020

Maids are in highly demand lately. One generation earlier, females could manage homely duties along with 2-3 kids. Now, it is almost next to impossible in spite of having a single or two kids...Have even heard that a family of 3 members have 4 maids!!!Not joking, very serious...

Have even heard that females wait for the maid to come at home rather than HUSBAND!!

One day neighbour's maid didn't turn out for 2 days. She came to enquire about my maid whether she can work for 2-3 days till the time her maid comes. Unfortunately, my maid had just left and since doesn't have mobile (yes you heard right, she doesn't have a mobile!!!) I couldn't contact her. Over the conversation on maid with my neighbour, a very stupendous fact came out of the conversation. She said it has become very difficult to find maids now. Because of the fact that their kids have started taking education and they no longer wish to continue to do what their mother's did!!!!...dusting, watching clothes, cleaning utensils, etc.

I was taken aback when this thought struck me!!!No maid..baap re mera kaam ka kya hoga.???.mera kaam kaun karega???

Forget that, at least we were / are used to doing household work since mom never allowed us to wander / rest till the allotted work is done / finished

Is this the same with the current generation kids? I don't think so.. There may be few exceptions ofcourse. But majority of the kids don't even take water from matka or fridge!!!.forget about putting the plate in the sink or cleaning their plate..everything is given in their hands...They are hardly exposed to work..Everything is done by maid and whatever remains is done by parents..

Doest this mean, that the maids kids should not be educated? or does this mean that they should keep their tradition on by working as maids???Absolutely NOT..Every person has a right to educate..and earn and enjoy life...

Was just wondering what will happen to the kids when they grow up and find no maids to work for them!!!Will ROBOTS take their place???

Parents, JAGO ...specially the MOM's

Please think before making everything available to your kids in their hands...

PM Narendra Modi's' Independence Speech on August 15, 2014

I have enjoyed Independence day by doing nothing at home. I don't remember, why but I have never listened to any of the PM's speech live on TV. However, this time I decided to hear the speech since it was Narendra Modi's speech. Had heard and read lot of things about him, how good his oratory skills are and his vision of India. I was not disappointed. He gave a speech for about 70 minutes..And I listened to his speech repeat for about 70 times on TV. His speech was that good. There were many 'first time'things which he did and there are many things which were very laudable and impressive.

PM at Red Fort on Independence day

I have tried to compile few of the things which I liked and remembered. Please note, that it may not be the same order as he spoke.

First of all, he was one of the very few PM who didn't wear a bullet proof jacket while giving a speech from the box at the Red Fort.

PM at Red Fort addressing Independence speech

Secondly, he said Main Pradhan Mantri nahin hun, main Pradhan Sevak hun, main aapka Sevak hun. Indirectly people working under him, may they be chief of Army or navy or ministers they too become sevaks!!!.. he said this by citing a difference between a job and a service. When you ask a person in a private sector, what he / she does, they say main job karta/karti  hun but the same question when you ask a government employee he says main service karta hun..Mr. PM said, service meaning they are public servants and not masters. They are here to serve the people ...He said it has become a common practice of bribing the people to get the work done. "mujhe kya milega...This should be removed. There should be transparency in the work.

Secondly, he was the only PM who after the speech mingled with the school kids and the teachers!!!

PM mingling with school kids
Thirdly, last but not the least, I think he must be the only PM who instead of declaring various schemes on technology talked about toilets!!! and dignity for women.

It is very right and true that if you want to develop, you first start from your home...In his entire speech he never blamed other parties neither touched upon Pakistan or Kashmir issues. He spoke about very basic issues which are very necessary for the upliftment of the society. It is indeed necessary to start the development from the roots.

He talked about rape, girls women. He said when parents ask the girl, where she is going, whom she is going with, when she will be coming back, do they ask the same questions to their SON? it is high time that they start asking these questions to their son and not to their daughters..Their would be less incidences of rape and harassment of the women. He gave the example: if one family had five sons, it wouldn't give them guarantee that they would look after their old parents. But on the other hand, if in one family if there is only one girl, then she would sacrifice everything to look after her parents!!!

He talked about dignity of women. He said how women wait for the night to attend nature's call. It is a shame that their are no basic facilities for the women.

He also called for 'Corporate's' to help build separate toilets for boys and girls as their contribution towards social responsibility activity.

He remarked that how people will think him as crazy or mad for not talking about big big developments / policy things on the Independence day speech at historical Red Fort but talking about TOILETS!!!

He talked about Make in India / Made in India..he wanted India to make a Skilled India...He wanted to stop imports and increase exports. For that he said we need to develop skilled people. He said even if One person develops a unique thing which will help in avoiding imports, it would be a great achievement. He wanted "Zero Defect and Zero Effect". He said our products should have zero defect and it should have zero effect on our exports.

He also talked about Digital India. He said once upon a time people used to say that Railways connect people, but now it is the technology that connects people.

He also talked about e-governance.. He said by e-governance he meant easy governance, economy governance.

He wanted India to be a better tourist place and in order to become that he said first it has to be clean India. He said it is not only the responsibility of government but of the people also to keep the surrounding clean.
In order to do that, he announced a award for the best 'model village'. This was indeed a very good idea. Every village will strive to become a model village and in turn will be developed clean village.

He said we fought with Britishers to get freedom. Now we need to fight within ourselves to get rid of poverty and dirt.

He narrated one incidence of two kids killing the pigeon. Pigeon is injured and it fells down. Both the kids fight for it. They go their mother for justice. They ask the mother who is greater ? the one who killed or the one who helped the pigeon to survive. Mother says the one who helped the pigeon to surveive is greater than the one who killed. That kid was Gautam Buddha..Bachane wala shrehstha hota hai marne wala nahin!!

He also gave the example of the people of Nepal as to how they have changed. There are lesser incidences of  communal riots,

He said, Hum badlenge, tabhi desh badlega. It starts from "US"...NOT USA

He gave examples of the SAARC nations, esp Nepal, narrated the ideas and thoughts of Gandhiji, Jay Prakash Narayan, Swami Vivekanand, Lal Bahadur Shastri.

He said he could say all these things because he too have gone through these situations. He understands the plight of the people. He too came from a very average family.

When I heard him, I also felt I too should contribute something. To start with, I decided to to do 2 things: first of all I will be free of ILL thoughts which may / will come to my mind..Never to think ill about people / or be jealous. One doesn't do these things consciously but sometimes it happens!!!.. Even if it happens unconsciously , I will remove it consciously.

Secondly, I have decided I will keep Rs 100/- aside every month for my maid servant and will give it to her at the end of 6 months or 12 months. She will have lumpsum amount in her hand. Ofcourse without telling her!!!...

Thirdly, Have noticed that at our main signal on the highway, vagabonds have captured the area under the highway and have dirtied the place. They have captured even the footpath..Everything there is a filth. Will try to do something about that so that atleast the approach road to Thakur Village is clean.

Leh - Ladakh Trip (June 11- 18, 2014)

Julley (Hi),

Every year I do 2-3 trips depending on the budget of the trip viz. one religious trip, one trek and one leisure trip. I did my religious trip in March. Wanted to do either a trek or a leisure trip. May is the best time to do a trek. However, could not manage a trek this year, hence opted for a leisure trek. Was wanting to go to Ladakh for a long time. Mr. Vivek Awasthi (office friend) visited Ladakh last year thru Cox & Kings. His experience was good and urged me to visit Ladakh. Without thinking much or exploring other destinations or organizers, I booked for Ladakh with Cox and Kings. Since Amit also wanted to visit Ladakh , he too joined me for the trip.

Till the day we actually departed for the trip, we were not sure whether we would be going for this trip: courtesy Cox & kings!!!...We had to follow it up almost everyday for the payment & the Itinerary details. Finally a threatening call from Mr. Awasthi and a threatening mail from Amit forced them to expedite the matter. We received the payment details and the Itinerary just 15 minutes before the end of the day...At least our tour was confirmed J

I opted for Leh - Ladakh Super Saver Tour (Mumbai - Leh - Mumabai), while Amit opted for Delhi - Leh - Delhi. Cox and King had arranged an overnight stay at Hotel Lohomod, New Delhi.

Hotel stay was very comfortable. Rooms were very nice, food was good, hotel staff were very courteous. They managed to serve me breakfast at 4.45am!!! (Sandwiches, tea and cornflakes)

June 11, 2014. (New Delhi - Leh by flight)
We took a Flight from Delhi @ 6.45 am and reached Leh at 8.30am. Delhi to Leh journey is mind blowing. The view from the plane was breath taking..Actually felt like I was taking a tour through heaven...It was a picturesque sight...our plane was flying between the clouds and the snow clad mountains...Given a choice, I would have booked a mountain for myself!!.We never realised when the plane touched Leh airport.

At the airport, we met the entire group who had done the booking for Super Saver Leh - Ladakh tour thru Cox & Kings. We were thirteen of us (11 pax from one family plus Amit and Myself)...Transportation was arranged from Airport to the Hotel Lumbini. It was approx. 3kms from the airport.

We introduced ourselves. Jain family were from Jaipur.Myself from Mumbai, Amit from Navi Mumbai.

Ladakh means "land of high passes", It is a region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir of Northern India sandwiched between the Karakoram mountain range to the north and the Himalayas to the South, The Indian portion of Ladakh is composed of the Leh and Kargil districts. Leh district is the largest district of India, covering more than half the area of Jammu & Kashmir.

Since Leh is at high altitude, oxygen level is less, one gets breathless, dizziness...Organizers recommended us Diamox tablets.

After reaching the hotel, we were advised to take rest. We were told not to take bath and eat less. REST is mandatory to get acclimatized.

Many of them advised me not to carry warm clothes since June and July are kind of a summer in Leh. I very religiously followed their advise and carried only ONE SWEATSHIRT!!!...When I reached Leh, got a shock of my life, it was terribly cold... All the locals were wearing a windcheater during the day!!!...It seems that this time the winter had overly stayed..It had just snowed in some parts of the Leh. Next day, I bought a sweater, gloves and monkey cap!..Amit's brother was smarter. He gave Amit a bag full of WARM CLOTHES!!..he was saved...

Day 1 (Visit to Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa and Leh Palace)
Our tour started @ 8.30am. Two Innova were at our disposal, We were accompanied by Senior Jain and his wife, her sister and husband. Both the couples easily mingled with us. They enlightened us with their travel experiences. They were also fond of Music and last  but the not the least "Eating"!!!..You name the food item and you will find it in their bag!!!!!Amit in fact commented Thank God Vandana, you had bought something to eat, else we would have cut a sorry figure!!!....

Shanti Stupa
Built by Japanese monks to promote world peace, This large hill top stupa has brightly coloured reliefs on its mid-levels and is topped by a spired white hemisphere.

Sankara Gompa Monastery
Almost all the Monasteries in Leh were similar. It has a huge golden plated Buddha statue with money scattered all over it. We were lucky to visit this monastery on that particular day. Once in a year, puja is performed in this monastery and it happened to be that day.14 monks were sitting and chanting the mantras. Pooja starts at 8 am and ends at 6 pm.  In every temple, u will find diyas , prasad and flowers offered to the deity. The worshipers offer either flowers, fruits or money. In Buddhism, they offer water in seven bowls and each bowl signifies specific meaning, viz. first bowl of water for drinking water, second bathing water, third flowers, fourth incense, fifth  light, sixth perfume and seventh food. Worshipers can offer anything they wish to. We saw Real juice, chocolates, bracelets, bangles, etc. being offered to the GOD.!!!I have never seen these kind of offerings anywhere...J
Sankara Gompa Monastery

Leh Palace
When you hear the word "palace" one imagines a very grande residence surrounded by beautiful greenery. The word palace in Leh is very underestimated, Simple residences are better!!!!!....Most of the palaces including the Leh palace was in a very dilapidated condition. Since the Governor was visiting the palace to inaugurate a picture gallery, they were renovating only that part of the palace where Governor would be visiting. Rest of the palace was in a very pathetic state!!!!Not recommended to be included in sight seeing.

Day 2 (Nubra Valley)
Popularly known as Dorma or 'the valley of flowers'. Route is via Khardungla Pass - the world's one of the highest motorable road (5602 mts). It is almost 4 - 4 1/2 hrs journey. Part of the road is very rough. However, en route to Nubra valley is stupendous...Either side of the road is snow and the place is surrounded by mountains, plain, snow clad mountains river, greenery....Amit said he will get Rooafza next time to eat 'gola'!!!Snow was so white in colour that a bleached cloth wouldn't be able to boast about its white colour...

We took a halt at Khardungla pass. This is one of the highest peak in the world. Oxygen level is very less. recommended only to stay not more than 20 minutes. There is only one restaurant at the Pass which offers black tea and Maggi. In the entire Leh, Maggi is very famous. May be, because it is hot, filling and takes less time to cook without any add ons...

On the way, there are many military camps, they too offer black tea (free) and medical aid.

Maggi story at Khardungla Pass

Amit at Khardungla Pass

On most of the monasteries and mountains, you will see the fliers tied on a string with mantras written on it. People tie these fliers to have safe journey and longer life.

En route, we came across Marmots, from the squirrel family. Cutest animal to cuddle in the cold!!!!It stays 6 months in the burrow during the cold and 6 months outside. Eats only grass and mud.

Marmot busy finding food..Alas if only he had looked at us, we would have guided him to Mr. Jain's eatery bag(s)!!!
We also experienced a slight snowfall during the journey. 90 kms away was the Siachen Brigade Pakistan border..We reached Nubra valley around 4pm and were welcomed by 'Abel'.

Sand Dunes @ Nubra Valley:

This is the only and one of the best place to visit in Nubra Valley. You will find snow clad mountains, plain mountains, green trees, and sand dunes at one place. Also, you get to see and ride two hump camels nowhere are found in India.

Diskit Monastery
Diskit is situated at an altitude of 10,310 ft above sea level, at the edge of desert on Shyok valley. Among the larger villages, Diskit is the administrative centre of Nubra valley. The valley was an important stopover on the caravan route between Tibet and China. Diskit monastery was given to Rimpoche of Thiksey monastery during 18th century. It is still under the management of Thiksey monastery and hence, considered a sub-gompa of Thiksey. The monastery constructed in Tibetan style and boasts of murals and frescos. The monastery houses about 100 monks. The prayer hall of the monastery has a statue of Maitreya Buddha and several images of fierce guardian deities. Diskit monastery, it is believed, still guards the wrinkled head and hand of a Mongol demon inside a temple in the monastery. According to legend, the Mongol demon once lived on the land where the monastery stands and wrecked havoc on the people. Even after being slain, the demon kept resurrecting which has been stopped only by the monastery’s deities.

Day  6
Visit to Hall of Fame Museum / Adventure Park, Magnetic Hill , Zanskar River, Alichi Monastery, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib

You can see the biographies of eminent defense personalities, images and weapons used during Kargil war, Siachen and its heroes and their daily instruments and lifestyle of Ladakhi people. 30 minutes of video is shown on Kargil war. While watching the video realised that, hearing, watching and actually going through the situations is an entirely different experience. I was literally in tears when I saw the video, the letters of the jawans, the small fully equipped tent in which they live!!!And here we fight for petty things…..

Magnetic Hill

Magnetic hill is located near Leh. The hill is alleged to have magnetic properties strong enough to pull cars uphill and force passing aircraft to increase their altitude in order to escape magnetic interference. We tried with our vehicles..The magnetic stretch is hardly 20mtrs. Still the experience was amazing!!!

Gurudwara Pathar Sahib
Beautiful Gurudwara constructed in the memory of Guru Nanak, about 25 miles away from Leh. When we entered the hall, prayers were going on. I and Amit sat for few minutes, took the darshan and then proceeded for the prasad. At the Gurudwaras, you will usually find langar (lunch), tea/coffee and snacks. We opted to have lunch followed by hot tea. The Jain family didn't had lunch for two reasons, first they wanted Jain food and secondly they thought while returning from Alchi they will lunch. However, for me and Amit none of these reasons existed!!!.I have no idea why this happens, but this is the second time when I visited Gurduwara (first being at the Hemkund Sahib gurudwara, Uttarakhand) I had tears in my eyes....no reason whatsoever!!.We were about to leave when Amit remembered he had not donated any money...Told him it's ok, however he said he doesn't prefer to have free lunches at the temples and so very graciously donated few notes....

Alchi Monastery (comprises of five temples)

From Gurudwara, we started to Alchi Monastery. It was almost 2hrs drive. Drive is so enjoyable that you forget the distance traveled. Entire Leh is surrounded by huge mountains, greenery and lakes. At times, we found the the road to the destination was magnificent than the actual destination!!!!

Alchi is a village and monastery in the Leh district of Ladakh region situated on the bank of Indus River, 70 km downstream from the capital in Leh. Unlike the other gompas in Ladakh, Alchi is situated on lowland, not on a hilltop. The village is famous for the existence of one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh (a national heritage) Alchi Monastery, mainly known for its magnificent, and well-preserved 11th- or 12th-century wall paintings, all in an Indo-Himalayan style.

When we reached the monastery, it was closed for lunch time. One of the monk was preaching and there were almost 80-90 people assembled to listen to the monk. Some were sitting outside the temple. We waited till the temple opened. As usual, this monastery too had a huge statue of Buddha and few other deities. This visit can easily be missed...

Zanskar River (confluence of two rivers, Indus and Zanskar)
Zanskar is the river formed from the junction of two streams, Lungnak means 'dark gorge' and Stod, which carries the melt water of the great Drang-drung glacier. River is uinque for its two distinct colours, the muddy Zanzkar river and the blue Indus river.

Amit, ready to take a reverse dive at the Zanskar River
River Rafting can be done at this river. The Jain's decided not to go for it since it was toooo costly. We too decided to skip it...

Day 7:  On to Pangong Lake

After breakfast we started our trip to Pangong lake. Yes, it is the same lake where the climax scene of the film 3 Idiots was  shot. We had only heard about this lake..We were completely unaware of what laid ahead of us...
Since it was 6th day of the trip, we gelled well with the Jain family. We also enjoyed the company of Jain family. They have traveled to many places, international as well as in India. They shared their experiences of travel. Just as we started the tour from hotel, Mr. Jain (Sr) suggested that each one of us would sing devotional song. Each one of us sang 2 devotional songs..Amit instantly composed a poem on the nature..of course he didn't sing it, he read it...Later (I don't remember exactly) the conversation started towards "Crux of happiness". That's it..I knew I can now peacefully go to sleep. Simple, this was the forte of THE AMIT...This is his one of the favorite topic of discussion!!! Other two being, "Feel" & " Connect". He can go on for days discussing WHAT EXACTLY IS HAPPINESS, HOW DOES ONE FEEL IT!!!I really should appreciate and thank Mr. Jain for keeping Amit engaged in the conversation. Finally after 45 minutes of discussion, Mr Jain to some extent, was able to convince him but of course not fully...At least He tried!!!

We were busy enjoying the road side view of the mountains, snow.... There were very few stalls on the way. These stalls have only 2 things to offer: Maggi and Tea!!!

Finally we got a glimpse of the lake..I was awestruck with the colours of the lake....various shades of blue, green, brown could be seen..This indeed is one of the wonders of the nature...There were many opinion on the colours of the lake..some one said it is the shadow of the clouds, some said shadow of the mountains, some even added that it is the reflection of the coloured stones!!!!!!!!

Pangong lake in the Himalayas is situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft). ). It is 134 km (83 mi) long and extends from India to Tibet. Approximately 60% of the length of the lake lies in Tibet. The lake is 5 km (3.1 mi) wide at its broadest point. All together it covers 604 km. During winter the lake freezes completely, despite being saline water.

It is about five hours drive from Leh most of it on a rough and dramatic mountain road. The route passes through beautiful Ladakh countryside, crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and traverses the Changla pass, (the third highest motorable mountain pass in the world) where army sentries and a small teahouse greet visitors.

This lake is famous for film shoots. 3 Idiots shooting was done at this lake. Almost all the restaurants are named either by the name of the film or by the actors name in the film…

Words fail to describe the lake. One simply has to see it…and of course FEEL IT… Usually when you see water you feel like putting your feet in the water. When I went near the lake my toe touched the water and I was shocked…water was tooooooooooooooooooooo damn cold. No one dared to put their feet in the water. However, Amit had decided that he would take a bath in the lake and he did so next morning!!

When you see the lake, you feel there is nothing else on the earth which is worth looking at!!!

I, usually like to take a walk alone at the beach, river, lake, etc. What better place to reminiscence your life!!!....Things which you dont want in life just throw it in the lake!!! I had a lovely walk in the evening post sunset as well in the morning before the sunrise.

Pangong lake

Our tents were very close to the lake. Amenities at the tent were beyond our expectations. They were too good. Food was good. There was enough blankets to keep your warm. Evenings and Mornings are too cold at the lake. I was wearing 5 layers of clothing in the night and on the top of it there were 2 blankets!!!...It was a very funny situation inside the tent. You cannot come remove the blankets because of the cold and since the tent was fully closed we felt suffocation and had problems in breathing.

Thiksey Monastery
While returning from Pangong lake, we visited Thiksey Monastery. Jain family were too tired to visit the Monastery. It is said that in Leh, one must see the Diskit and Thiksey Monastery. Looking at the state of the Monasteries, I too was hesitant to go, but then decided since it was in the package, I thought of visiting the Monastery. I & Amit went to see the Monastery.  The structure of this monastery was good. It took 3 years to built this monastery and was inaugurated by Dalai Lama. (People of Leh worshiped only 2 people, viz. Buddha and Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism is located at the top of hill. The monastery is famous for its architecture and its location.  The 12 storey monastery has 10 temples, assembly hall, and residence for 120 monks and nunnery. The monastery buildings are structured in hierarchical order. There is one big statue of Maitreya (future Buddha) which covers almost two floor of the monastery that is 40 feet in height. Tara temple of Goddess Tara is another major attraction for the visitors. Apart from visiting monastery one can also find some rare and precious stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords in the monastery.

Thiksey Monastery

This is the monastery where for the first time the monk took some interest in telling us the importance of the monastery and the offering of seven bowls of water. It was worth the visit.

Shey Palace
The Shey Monastery was built in 1655 on the instructions of Deldon Namgyal, in the memory of his late father, Singay Namgyal, within the palace complex. The monastery is noted for its giant copper with gilded gold statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha. The palace is almost in ruins. Almost all of the palaces in Leh are in shambles. These palace can safely be skipped from the sight seeing.

Visiting Ladakh was a very beautiful experience.!!!Enjoyed every moment of the tour...............

Overall arrangement of the tour was very nice. Stay was comfortable, Food was eatable, Journey was enjoyable.....and Moments are memorable...J
